Over the last six years our curriculum has grown into a conceptual framework that has proven extremely effective within our learning community.

PHASE I: Preparing the soil and planting the seeds

Grades 1st thru 4th, approximate ages 6 thru 10 year olds

The basic premise of these years is to establish a sound foundation of learning. This is accomplished by developing an individualized set of goals and objectives for each student based on national and Florida state standards. At the end of this phase, each student masters age appropriate reading comprehension, writing and math skills, enabling a smooth transition into the next phase of learning. In addition, current events, social studies, world topics, science and fine arts are explored. Through field trips with students of all ages, the excitement of learning through experience establishes an understanding that the world is our classroom, to be explored at every opportunity.

PHASE II: Nurturing the plants and tending the garden

Grades 5th thru 7th, approximate ages 10 thru 12 year olds.

The main goal of this educational period is to build upon the strong foundation established during Phase I. Students continue to develop a sense of independence, self reliance and confidence both educationally and socially. Emphasis is on oral and written forms of communication, including a significant increase in writing, editing, research, analytical and critical thinking. Phase II is an introduction to all major subject areas: algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, geography, world history and American history.

At this phase, students practice skills and gain the conceptual knowledge needed for their next phase of learning. It is here that the fire is ignited and the passion is uncovered. Encouraging individual expression of interests and talents, students leave this phase with a strong sense of self.

PHASE III: Sharing the bounty

Grades 8th thru12th, approximate ages 13 thru 18 years.

During Phase III, all prerequisites for graduation from a Florida high school are met With support from Florida Virtual School. The student, parent/guardian, primary teacher and guidance counselor decide upon an individualized curriculum to meet all the requirements for a high school diploma. Students are encouraged to enroll in the most rigorous curriculum for their specific needs, often an Honors or Advanced Placement curriculum. Daily class time is dedicated to support in these subject areas. In addition, students select a focus of study, a special project and present a thesis. Upper school students continue to engage in all Walden activities, providing students with numerous opportunities to give back through community service.

Group projects, collaborative learning and forming strong positive peer groups are an integral part of the Phase III curriculum. With the purpose of extrapolating data, problem solving and application of knowledge in real life situations, each student will choose a community project or mentorship that, once established, they see through to graduation. It is during this phase students learn the importance of commitment and discover that they can make a difference.
